24/7 Review: Part 1
"Editor Mike changes Juliette's diaper, deftly using a moist wipe to make certain that his most precious offspring is clean, and for the time being, serene. He stands over her a contrast in size, and a stranger might see his bald dome and hulking form, and register surprise as he makes goo goo sounds, and grins goofily, in an attempt to make the newborn smile. She does, and gurgles, and Editor Mike scoops her up, tenderly, and hands her off to his wife, Jessica. Because The Sweet Science needs his attention, because TSS Universe demands new content. If they don't get, they get as cranky as Juliette, protesting her soiled diaper."
Please read that last bit in Schrieber's voice, and add some soundtrack music of your choice to juice it up...
HBO's latest 24/7 takes a comprehensive look at the two principals in the November 13th junior middleweight clash pitting Manny Pacquiao against Antonio Margarito. The first installment ran Saturday, and we got a look at Pacquiao in the political ring, as Congressman. "That's my dream, to serve people. I want to help them, because I know what they're feeling. I know the feeling of being nothing in life," says the seven division champion, who is gunning for a title in an eighth class. The Congressman has taken leave from the current session to train for his fight, and we hear that he gets constant updates from aides.
Is it possible, we wonder, is the man spreading himself too thin? Will he leave the sweet science to put more emphasis on politics?
Freddie Roach admits that he worries some when Manny talks about "missing his job" and he reminds the fighting pol that boxing is his number one vocation.
Viewers see in contrast that Antonio Margarito, referred to as "a disgraced ex champion," is fully on message, looking to shore up his rep, tainted by his hand wrap flap. He tells viewers that he didn't know what was in his wraps as he waited to face off with Shane Mosley. Most folks find that hard to believe, but we'll likely get as much closure on this as we have on the JFK assassination. Margarito, in street clothes, tells us that he grilled trainer Javier Capetillo, asking him about the hardened wraps, and wondered why ingredients for plaster of Paris were found on the confiscated pads. His co-manager Sergio Diaz tells us Tony was depressed as he sat out for 16 months, after California pulled his license. "I'll prove to the whole boxing world that I can win and I'm back," Margarito said.
Roach and Pacman both tell viewers that they are sure Margarito knew. "It's common sense," Pacquiao says.
"We have to give him a chance to recover his career," says the benevolent Filipino.
Moving on, we see Manny's advisor Michael Koncz say that Team Pacquiao did compromise on the issue of drug testing while negotiating with Team Mayweather for a superfight, to a point. "We pretty much agreed to anything on the drug testing, except not within seven days," Koncz says. We'd heard before that Manny had agreed to be tested at any time, no constraints, so there ya go...
Margarito doesn't look like a man holding on to a sick secret, a toxic knowledge that drains his energy. His dimples are on display, and his team seems confident that he'll get it done against Manny. Trainer Robert Garcia says he accepted the job training Margarito after accepting Margarito's explanation about the wraps.
We hear that he'd had to drop 35 pounds in a seven week camp to get ready for Mosley, but we see him weighing 158 for a fight which is set for 150 max, or less. Team Margarito had battled for a few pounds more, but they hold little leverage, and lost this skirmish.
Footage is shown of Coach Roach in the Philippines, as schoolgirls giggle like it's Paul McCartney and 1964.
Footage of Pacquiao sparring is offered. Glenn Tapia and Michael Medina are in to approximate Margarito. Pacquiao's timing is off, and we see him getting whacked around some. "In Roach's view, training is slightly behind schedule," we hear, ominously, and add to that a balky left heel, which keeps Manny from doing all his roadwork. Also, the politics thing is worrying Freddie slightly.
Much ado about nothing much? Storylines to pad the show? Or legitimate points of worry? We shall see come Nov. 13. EM leans toward the search for storylines theory...
Margarito's wife of 12 years, Michelle, says that the wrapflap has been tough on them. But she stood by her guy, we see.
Garcia smacks Marg's belly with a stick for three minutes, a Signapore special of sorts, and EM wonders if he can last three..seconds, that is...
I am left giving Margarito more of a chance at toppling Manny, which is, I believe, the point of the show. "I feel powerful, I feel good about knocking him out," the comebacking Californian says.
Part 2 premieres next Saturday.
What about you, TSS U? Did this installment leave you thinking Margarito has a solid chance at the upset?
Pacquiao getting better for Margarito
“As I have been saying, there were many distractions, but I can assure you we had survived all those and that Manny’s been getting better each day,” Roach said yesterday, the day Team Pacquiao was scheduled to resume training in Manila.
For one, we’ve started working on our strategy. We, definitely, now how to win against that guy, who undoubtedly bigger, heftier and stronger,” Roach said by way of assessing the results of the team’s one month efforts.
“He’s lagged more than half of the number of rounds we’re targeting before the actual fight day. He’d faced three taller and stronger mates, whose fighting style approximate that of Margarito,” he said in reference to world junior-welterweight champion Amir Khan, promising Glen Tapia and super-welterweight Michael Medina.
Counting yesterday’s 10-round sparring, the Pacman would have lagged no less than 80 rounds, some 40 rounds shy of Roach’s target 120 rounds.
Team Pacquiao left this summer capital late afternoon yesterday following his last day of preparations here and is scheduled to resume working out today and tomorrow at the Elorde Gym in Quezon City where he actually started his buildup program.
“Everything, including putting the reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight champ in tip-top shape will be polished when the team reach Los Angeles,” he said.
The team leaves tomorrow night for L.A.
The flurry of typhoon “Juan” which devastated Northern Luzon, including this city, somehow cancelled the routine roadwork, but Roach said Pacquiao made up for that by plyometric training being applied by conditioning coach Alex Ariza.
Ariza, for his part, said he is now focusing on the food Pacquiao is taking daily so he can grow a little heavier than his present state.
“He is between 150 to 152 pounds as of yesterday, but if we do not supplement his food intake, that would decrease considerably with the scheduled shifting of his training to high gear,” the Columbian conditioning expert said.
The Pacquiao-Margarito bout for the vacant World Boxing Council super-welterweight crown is set at catch weight 151 pounds.
He assured though that there is nothing to worry about because of Pacquiao’s capacity to adjust to his training regimen.
Can Pacquiao vs. Margarito meet Arum's prediction of 1.3 million pay per views?
Speaking to the Manila Bulletin, Arum stated that he is expecting pay per view sales of well over 1.3 million, which is the amount that Pacquiao sold against Oscar De La Hoya.
Obviously Arum's predictions before an event are always going to be very high, and few industry insiders initially had the bout selling much over a million. Mainly because the main event isn't expected to be a close one and that Margarito's reputation with some of the fans is still in question.
Since the bout was announced though, Margarito has seemingly gained back a lot of the support that he lost due to his suspension, and helped by the big size difference many are now predicting a close fight that could go either way.
However the odds on anything except a knockout win for Pacquiao are growing longer, meaning that despite glowing reports from Margarito's camp and mixed ones from Pacquiao's, the big money is still being laid down on the Filipino. This in turn could mean either that the public won't be as interested, because they see the fight as having only one winner, or that a lot of people are putting money down and won't want to miss it.
Conversely the undercard of the event is packing a lot more drawing power than any of Pacquiao's recent fights, featuring the likes of Mike Jones, Kelly Pavlik and Guillermo Rigondeux, as well as several of Pacquiao's countrymen. Actually putting on an undercard worth watching is a big step in the right direction that both Golden Boy and Top Rank have recently taken, and it can only increase the pay per view sales in this case.
Pacquiao's March fight against little known Joshua Clottey sold possibly a lot better than expected at 700k, given that the odds were very long and that Clottey has a fairly small fan base. Part of that success though might have been from the novelty of staging a fight at the Cowboys stadium rather than the fight itself.
Against Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao achieved sales of 1.2 million, and the odds for the fight were much closer. Comparatively Margarito has a bigger fan base than Clottey, and is a more interesting character than Cotto, who despite his skill in the ring often comes across as rather flat in hyping up his fights.
Those being the current circumstances, it's difficult to say for sure just how well the fight will sell, but there is a growing feeling that the jump from welterweight to junior middleweight might be a lot more difficult for Pacquiao than the climb to welterweight was.
If that idea continues to spread, then the sales could well beat those that he achieved with De La Hoya, and if that happens, undoubtedly Pacquiao and Arum will both have an eye on beating the 1.4 million buys Golden Boy achieved with Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley.
Pacquiao Just on Right Track for Margarito
Manny Pacquiao is "100 percent" in the punch mitts session but is only "50 percent" in sparring, top trainer Freddie Roach said on Tuesday. But Roach remains confident that when they head back to the Wild Card in Hollywood, the Filipino pound-for-pound king would be in his element, punishing just about anyone put in front of him in sparring as the buildup for his Nov. 13 battle with Antonio Margarito takes a major step.
"We'll get by," said Roach just before Pacquiao sparred with Glen Tapia and Michael Medina behind closed doors, allowing only a few, like Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, to watch the action.
Roach said this week and the coming week in the US would be "a big week for sparring" and the "toughtest two weeks of training camp."
"We are getting better and better," said the 50-year-old Roach, who still believes his fighter will have too much speed and ammunition to stave off the Mexican's challenge.
Team Pacquiao is slated to leave for the US this Saturday night and plans to motor down to Manila as soon as the weather permits.
Roach had initially wanted to go to Manila last Sunday for fear that the weather would hold them here and endanger their departure for Los Angeles.
As of Tuesday afternoon, howling winds and heavy rains were still being felt here and Roach shook his head when told about the possibility of being stranded in this mountain resort city.
"I told them we should have left Sunday but..." said Roach.
Once they set up camp in Manila, Pacquiao will work out at the Elorde Gym in Quezon City, venue of the first week of training.
Told about the seemingly wonderful time Margarito is having in his own training camp in Oxnard, California, Roach was convinced the 5-11 Margarito is indeed peaking just in time.
"He’s in great shape. He’s training like an animal," said Roach, who predicts that the fight will not go 12 rounds and that Pacquiao win on a late-round stoppage.
Pacquiao will KO Margarito with big right hand
After dropping a few pounds, Monday’s sparring session with his partners saw Pacquiao display his speed.
Roach said Pacquiao will surely get his punches on Margarito, especially when he throws them in combinations.
But the American trainer believes Pacquiao’s potential knockout punch against Margarito will be his vastly improved right hand.
“I really believe it will be the right…it’s so strong now,” said the Hall of Famer coach.
Roach said the left-handed Pacquiao, with his south paw stance, puts the Filipino’s right hand closer to his opponent.
The American trainer has transformed the Filipino champion from a “one dimensional boxer," over-reliant on his powerful left hand, into a two-fisted fighter who can throw heavy bombs with his left and right hands.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum saw this two-fisted version of Pacquiao on Monday when the Filipino went through 10 rounds of sparring.
In one of those rounds, the hard-hitting Filipino busted the lip of training partner Glen Tapia to Arum’s approval.
'Old Pacquiao' will beat Margarito
Arum earlier said the "old Pacquiao" will defeat Margarito.
“The old Pacquiao would have no problem beating Antonio Margarito. He still has time to bring the old Pacquiao back when he is in LA,” he said in a report posted on Philboxing.com.
Pacquiao had 4 rounds with Tapia, another 4 round with British champion Amir Khan, and 2 rounds with Mexican Michael Medina.
The Filipino has a shed few pounds, after having trouble with the timing of his punches following his weight gain, hence, the improved speed.
His conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, said their present training is geared toward getting back Pacquiao’s agility.
“Manny's getting bigger, I think he's starting to be a bit worried he's getting too big, so right now, I'm gonna focus on his speed and get him faster,” said Ariza.
Pacquiao said more improvements are coming after they decided to lessen the plyometric routines in their training.
“Bibilis pa tayo kasi babawasan namin ‘yung plyometrics, ‘yung pampalaki ng katawan at lakas. So focus kami ngayon on speed (We’re going to get faster because we’re lessening the plyometrics, which adds bulk and power. Our focus now is speed),” said the WBO welterweight champion.
In a separate report by Philstar.com, Roach said Pacquiao will step into the ring no heavier than 150 pounds.
“Again, he’s (Margarito) bigger but size don’t win fights. Skill does,” he said. “That’s what we’re going to do – weigh in and climb the ring at almost the same weight. Manny’s not going in there heavier than 150 because it might slow him down a bit.”
Pacquiao and Margarito will fight it out on November 13 (November 14 in Manila) for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight title.
Although the contracted weight is at 151 pounds, the 5’1” Margarito has the edge in size and reach against the 7-division champion from the Philippines.
Margarito can't beat Pacquiao
Pacquiao fans are anxious; some pretty nervous. Reports are that their idol is somewhat cramming. Tied and pulled in several different directions with his newfound responsibilities as a Congressman on top of his other commitments being one of the biggest national sports heroes wherever in the world, 'The Pac Man' has been training like a compromised man.
Last minute trips to Manila.
Cancelled training sessions.
Team members asking him to take training seriously.
Bob Arum giving him a satisfactory grade as opposed to past training camp assessments where the legendary promoter sang his praises saying he has seen no other train like him even putting him on top of the likes of Ali and Leonard.
Reports of Pacquiao trying to regain his speed.
Surely these reports are quite unsettling for the Pacland faithful. Although it's not time to hit the panic button just yet as Pacquiao will be headed back to the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood on October 23 where he can focus inside the strictly enforced isolated confines of Freddie Roach's famed facility, it's understandable why even the most faithful of Pacquiao fans are beginning to worry.
Margarito is naturally bigger and stronger. And against bigger guys, 'The Tijuana Tornado' has proven that he is one tough hombre'. The Mexican is on a mission to claim his redemption after falling from grace from the illegal hard wrap controversy that momentarily put his career in limbo. Have you ever had a near-death experience? Surely that's how Margarito feels right now with this gift of a second-chance he is getting in facing boxing's biggest superstar. Expect a fighter who will give it his all like he has nothing to lose.

You can take all the pros going for Margarito: His size, strength, motivation on top of everything else. Realistically though, Pacquiao simply is a far superior fighter than him. At 100%, Pacquiao's speed, movement and accurate 8-punch combinations will land like homed missiles on the easy-to-hit, flat-footed Mexican. Margarito can learn all the head movement he can in one training camp, but chances are, Pacquiao will get his best punches in uncontested. And when that happens, it'll remind boxing fans of the phrase 'the bigger they are, the harder they fall'.
If Pacquiao is to lose on November 13, you can credit Margarito for doing everything he needed to do, but in reality, it would be more about questioning whether Pacquiao did what he was supposed to.
Only Pacquiao can beat Pacquiao at this point. Will Pacquiao allow it? His trainers can only do so much. And as the Nike slogan goes, only 'Pac Man Knows'.
Margarito looking very sharp
“Margarito looks great and he’s very sharp,” Arum said by phone on Wednesday. “He’s training extremely hard, and I think his new trainer [Robert Garcia] is doing wonders [on him].”
The Hall of Fame promoter announced that he will leave for the Philippines on Thursday (Friday in Manila) to visit his prized fighter and to preside over Pacquiao’s October 18 media day in Baguio City, where the Filipino ring superstar is holding training camp.
When asked how Pacquiao’s training was going, Arum said, “I checked with them and they said that he’s doing well. I really don’t know, but I will see for myself.”
In Baguio City, Freddie Roach was reported to have asked Pacquiao to concentrate on his training by doing away with basketball and weekend trips to Manila that the trainer feels are interfering with Pacquiao’s training.
Reports by the local media indicate that Pacquiao has skipped his usual early-morning road work because of apparent tiredness from playing basketball the night before, and has left camp for two consecutive weekends to attend to functions in Manila.
Arum, chief executive of Top Rank Promotions, said that Pacquiao-Margarito promises to be an exciting fight between two proud and talented fighters known for their ferociousness in the ring.
He added that the fight will be a classic clash between Pacquiao’s vaunted speed and explosiveness against Margarito’s relentless attack and punching power.
Both boxers, who are under Top Rank’s promotional umbrella, will fight for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title.
Arum said that the fight has no rematch clause but Pacquiao, being the bigger fighter in the draw, would be given a rematch by Margarito in case of a big upset.
Bookmakers have pegged Pacquiao a 6-1 betting favorite, although boxing pundits consider the odds quite unrealistic.
Pacquiao’s training right on schedule
“On Manny’s behalf, there is nothing to worry about," Konz said. “He’s right on schedule and he’s extremely motivated."
Konz had to make the guarantee amidst great concerns that the 31-year-old Pacquiao has been incautious in training for a fight he considers time and again, as one of the toughest in his boxing career.
Frequent playing of basketball at night and missed early morning road works depicted the early part of Pacquiao’s training in the Baguio highlands.
Likewise, he had to break camp and travel back to Manila and honor a commitment as special guest during a military sports competition in Camp Crame as well as participate in a huge charity run aimed at the rehabilitation of the Pasig River.
The boxing icon also skipped training for a day after contracting a mild cold.
Konz did acknowledge the hectic schedule Pacquiao had in his capacity as boxer, celebrity and congressman from the lone district of Sarangani.
But at the same time, he stressed that the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter has never been remiss preparing for his bid to win a record eighth world title exactly a month from now.
“Manny is working very hard and doesn’t want his fans to worry that anything is wrong with his training, he said."
Konz added Pacquiao is doing well in training camp and expects the phase to shift to higher gear with less than two weeks left before the Filipino boxers’ entourage proceeds to Los Angeles, California for the final stage of the camp at the Wild Card gym of trainer Freddie Roach. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
Antonio Margarito Training Preview for Manny Pacquiao
Margarito-Pacquiao is promoted by Top Rank Promotions and will be an HBO pay-per-view televised bout for the vacant WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown.
FanHouse was at Oxnard recently for a behind the scene look at Margarito's preparation.
Zyrene Parsad to sing national anthem for Pacquiao-Margarito bout in Texas
The November 13th Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito WBC junior middleweight title event figures to be a lively occasion. Aside from seeing the world’s premier fighter going up against his most physically challenging foe, fans will be treated to a solid undercard featuring the likes of former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, Cuban standout Guillermo Rigondeaux and an interesting welterweight scrap between Mike Jones and Jesus Soto Karass.Las Vegas-based Top Rank promotions certainly knows how to host a party and word has also recently spread that young songstress Zyrene Parsad will likely be singing the national anthem on the night of the 13th at the request of Pacquiao. The General Santos City fighter was reportedly impressed with Parsad’s rendition of the national anthem during the recent Saranggani’s investors’ night at the New World Hotel and asked her to sing the anthem in his fight. Just like that Parsad has the opportunity of a lifetime in front of her.
Parsad is known by many for her involvement on GMA Network’s ARE YOU THE NEXT BIG STAR?, where she finished in third place. As reported by various outlets, Parsad has been running everyday and swimming to strengthen her vocal chords for the event.
It should be noted that the singing of “Lupang Hinirang” has been the center of controversy in recent events, including Martin Nievera’s version at Pacquiao’s May 2009 blowout over Ricky Hatton. Parsad said she will be contacting Teddy Atienza of National Historical Institute on all particulars relating to the expectations of her performance.
There are always several subplots in every notable boxing event. While November 13th will be a chance for Pacquiao to win a title in a record 8th weight division, it will be business as usual in many regards for the 31 year old fighter. It is actually Parsad who will have the chance to also elevate her career to new heights, as the world will surely be watching.

Antonio Margarito's Filipino Fan Favors Him Over Manny Pacquiao
As he prepares in Baguio City of his native Philippines under four-time Trainer of the Year, Freddie Roach, WBO welterweight (147 pounds) champion Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) is the pride of his nation heading into his Top Rank Promotions, HBO pay-per-view televised Nov. 13 clash with ex-titlist Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) for the vacant WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown. But as Margarito trains for their bout in the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy run by his trainer by the same name, the Mexican-born fighter has the support of at least one Filipino fan who believes that he will defeat Pacquiao and prevent him from earning his eighth crown in as many different weight divisions.
That fan is Master Garcia, who is not related to Robert Garcia, who runs a martial arts studio adjacent to the boxing academy. FanHouse spoke exclusively with Master Garcia, a martial arts instructor who also trains the USA National Team.
Pacquiao 85 percent in shape
Just like that, Manny Pacquiao, after showing signs of weakness the other day, is back in shape. The world’s greatest boxer showed up at the Shape Up Gym yesterday and sparred six rounds against Mexicans Glen Tapia and Michael Medina a day after skipping his roadwork and gym session due to colds.
“Wala naman (It’s nothing),” an insider quoted Pacquiao as saying.
True enough, whatever kept him inside his hotel suite the whole of Wednesday hardly showed in his sparring session that left his Pinoy trainer Buboy Fernandez saying he’s close to 85 percent ready.
Pacquiao did not go out for his morning roadwork yesterday but his handlers said he should be out at the Burnham Park today, a non-sparring day, and be with his team, including strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza.
Even Freddie Roach was so happy to see Pacquiao back in the gym.
“It’s normal. It happens to every boxer. Maybe it’s because of the changing weather,” said Fernandez, who doused fears that Pacquiao’s training camp has been stalled by his reported bout with sinusitis or colds.
Fernandez said Pacquiao even played basketball Wednesday evening at the Cooyeesan Plaza Hotel to shake off the virus.
“All he needed was to sweat it out and a glass of hot calamansi (lemon) juice. Now he’s okay,” added Fernandez.
Amir Khan, the reigning WBA super-welterweight champion, is now in Baguio to join the training camp as he also prepares for his Dec. 11 fight with Argentine Marcos Maidana at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
“I’ve always wanted to join Pacquiao’s camp and learn from it,” said the rising star from Britain.
He said he’s behind Pacquiao all the way as the Filipino icon gears up for his Nov. 13 showdown with rugged Mexican Antonio Margarito.
“I’m totally behind Manny Pacquiao. I think Manny is the best fighter in the world,” he told www.insidesports.ph, adding that he doesn’t see the fight lasting more than nine rounds.
“Whoever you put in front of Manny Pacquiao, I think Manny will beat easily. He’s got the skill, he’s got the speed, he’s got the footwork. This fight I think Manny will stop him maybe in round eight or nine,” he was quoted as saying.

Pacquiao not in best shape for Margarito?
But if it was true, it didn’t show yesterday when the 31-year-old Filipino icon sparred five rounds with Mexican Glen Tapia at the Shape Up Gym in Baguio City.
“He almost went down,” said Team Pacquiao’s Nonoy Neri of the Mexican sparring partner who, according to Roach, may be just as good as Antonio Margarito.
Roach described Tapia as “cocky” and that he did “very, very good” when he sparred four rounds with Pacquiao last Thursday, the first day of sparring for the awaited Nov. 13 showdown.
The other sparring partner, Michael Medina, also did four rounds with Pacquiao last Saturday, and took some solid shots from the pound-for-pound champion that he looked ready to go as well.
A couple more sparring partners are coming in with reigning WBA super-welterweight champ Amir Khan probably on the way to Manila as of presstime, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on standby.
Pacquiao has always done so well in sparring, even when Roach threw taller, bigger partners at him. He had a couple of boxers bloodied in his previous camps, and yesterday he was all over Tapia.
Still, Roach said Pacquiao is far from tip-top shape.
“The direction I want him to move is a little better. The stuff we were doing yesterday came through today. He’s not 100 percent; we still have a long way to go,” Ted Lerner of Ring Magazine quoted Roach as saying.
“We’re just beginning to get the game plan down and get the timing and so forth. He did what I wanted him to do a couple of times. It’s a work in progress,” added Lerner, embedded in the Pacquiao camp.
Roach said if Pacquiao fought today, chances are he’d lose, but that won’t really happen in November.
“If that Manny Pacquiao went into a fight, we’d probably lose. But that’s why we have an eight-week training camp, so we can improve. You can’t expect too much out of a guy who hasn’t been in the ring since last March,” Lerner wrote.
Roach said Pacquiao was at 50 to 60 percent of himself when they arrived in Baguio more than a week ago, and said the Pinoy icon should be close to 90 percent before they fly to Los Angeles later this month.
Roach said Team Pacquiao should be in LA on Oct. 23, a Saturday, so Pacquiao could rest the whole of Sunday before plunging back into training the following day.
Margarito Not Worried About Roach, Focused on Pacquiao's KO
Margarito is not concerned with the comments being made by Roach, he is only focused on knocking Pacquiao out on November 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
I'm not worried about that [the statements]. I'm training as hard as I can. You just have to put some pressure on Manny. At this weight, I am stronger than him. I feel confident that I can knock him out,Margarito said.
Pacquiao's Moves After Margarito
Next month on consecutive Saturdays, Manny Pacquiao will go for his 8th world title in 8 divisions against Antonio Margarito, and Sergio Martinez will defend the Middleweight title against Paul Williams in their much anticipated rematch. I believe Pacquiao will win his fight, even though I expect Margarito will give a solid performance. I expect a comfortable points win for Pacquiao, but what happens if Pacquiao dominates Margarito? That’s where things get very interesting.
Even though Martinez and Williams will be focusing on their fight, they are both going to have a keen eye on what happens the week before. It’s no secret Williams has basically spent the last year looking for a Pacquiao fight. Even though Martinez has been less vocal, he wants the fight. Essentially everyone from 140 lbs - 154 lbs calls out Pacquiao after their fights. Martinez vs. Williams I was fantastic, and I expect the rematch could be even better. I give the slightest of edges to Martinez. Not knowing the next time Mayweather will fight again, I will make the winner of Martinez-Williams II, the number 2 boxer in the sport.
Even though it’s possible that Williams and Martinez could have a 3rd fight and Pacquiao could fight Cotto next year, the question is whether a dominant victory by Pacquiao would be enough to convince him to go for the Middleweight title against Sergio Martinez.
It’s unbelievable that Pacquiao could fight for the Middleweight title. It wasn't too long ago when Pacquiao jumped from lightweight to welterweight to fight Oscar De La Hoya, and Paul Williams said Oscar was going to pound Pacquiao, because the difference in height and strength was too much. Margarito wanted a De La Hoya fight, but Oscar chose to fight Pacquiao instead, which caused Margarito to rip De La Hoya for fighting a man too small for him, when a guy his size was standing right in front of him. Ironically, now Williams has been trying to get a fight against Pacquiao and Margarito is going to fight the “little man.”
The catch weight for Pacquiao-Margarito is 150 pounds, and I’m interested to see what Pacquiao's weight will be the night of the fight. I don’t think weight plays a huge factor in fights unless fighters have extreme advantages, like a 15-20 lb. difference between the fighters on fight night. If Pacquiao is about 154 on fight night against Margarito and knocks him down or wins almost every round, I don’t see a big difference with him fighting Martinez at the catch weight of 155 lbs and Pacquiao maybe coming in at 158 lbs on fight night.
As I've said before, I think a Pacquiao win leads to Pacquiao-Cotto II, but if Martinez beats Williams, a fight between Martinez and Pacquiao will probably be the best fight that can be made in the sport at the time. I don’t want to get too far ahead, because Williams could easily beat Martinez and mess up the possibility. I’m hoping that Martinez wins and I can spend next spring or summer talking about Pacquiao vs Martinez for the Middleweight Crown and the Pound for Pound Title.
Pacquiao vs Margarito is On
Arum and Koncz visited Monterrey which made a lucrative offer to stage the fight in competition with Abu Dhabi whose Royal Family representatives had met with Arum and Koncz and indicated they were very keen on staging the fight in the U.A.E on the eve of the Formula I Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.
Despite the reputation of Abu Dhabi and the oil-rich emirates penchant to stage major sports events, Arum indicated to us that he wanted a firm offer and was not inclined to bank on speculative numbers.
An overwhelming number of fight fans wanted a Pacquiao-Myweather fight and since that can’t be done this year at least, Pacquiao’s conditioning expert Alex Ariza told us he believes Margarito is a good choice since the fight will also be for the vacant WBC light middleweight title which would enable Pacquiao to reinforce his current record of seven titles in s even different weight divisions.
Margarito is the former WBA light middleweight champion who has a record of 38-6, with 27 knockouts and returned from a one year suspension slapped on him by the California State Athletic Commission after he was found to have used hand-wraps allegedly loaded with plaster-of-Paris prior to his 9th round TKO loss to Shane Mosley on January 24, 2009.
After serving his suspension Margarito fought and won a ten round unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia in a battle for the vacant WBC International light middleweight title on May 8, 2010 in Mexico.
However when he applied for a license and personally appeared before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to present his case, executive director Keith Kizer told us the Commission voted 4-1 to table the request. Kizer indicated that what the Commission did was to basically ask Margarito to first get his license from the California State Athletic Commission before the NSAC could consider his application for a license to fight in the state indicating it was the right thing to do in terms of respect for other US boxing commissions and their decisions.
Margarito who was being lined up to fight Pacquiao at the MGM Grand on November 13 after the Mayweather negotiations failed to prosper, now has a lucrative offer from Monterey for a Pacquiao fight for Pacquiao and Arum to consider, while Abu Dhabi is still in the picture after having shown huge interest in staging the fight in that Middle-East’s large-scale sports and entertainment center backed by the Royal Family of the United Arab Emirates.
A representative as well as a lawyer of the Emirati Royal Family met with Arum and Koncz last week and had promised to get back to them with what would be a firm offer over the weekend.
It seems that besides a site fee of $30 million the Abu Dhabi bid may include a total package which would give them all revenues including pay-per-view and which would sweeten the pot substantially.
